What are you called to do? What are you called to be?

Charles Shinaver

This pathway reminds me of the walkway between the University of Notre Dame and St. Mary’s College at Notre Dame, Indiana. Once when I was a sophomore at Notre Dame in January the lakes were frozen. I walked out a question mark and stood at it’s point. I looked at the grotto and the Mary on top of the Golden Dome.  In my mind I asked the prayerful question: “What am I called to do?”

The way I answered that question at that time was to become a psychology major. I did many service projects as all of us did at Notre Dame, but listening to people, being empathic was natural for me.  After Notre Dame I went to Harvard Graduate School of Education for an EdM. Then I went to DePaul University for another masters and my PhD in clinical child psychology.

As a young father I realized my oldest son had ADHD. I set out on a mission to help him with goal being to finish by the time he was 14 years old. I finished, just in time.

He graduated from Notre Dame as a computer science major. He now is a gainfully employed as a software developer.  He has done quite well. I felt the most powerful thing I did for him was Cogmed Working Memory Training.
